The Lancaster Fire Department invites the community to gather on Friday, October 9, 2026 at 7:00 p.m. for the annual Parade of Lights along Main Street to cap off Fire Prevention Week.
Members from the Fire Department will be onsite at area schools during the week teaching students the basics of fire safety. This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Charge into Fire Safety” and focuses on the safe use of lithium-ion batteries and the importance of preventing fires associated with rechargeable devices.
A few simple steps can help reduce the risk of a battery related fire according to Fire Chief, Randy Flynn. He encourages residents to:
- Charge devices on a hard, flat surface. Never charge devices on soft surfaces like bedding or pillows, where heat can become trapped.
- Pay attention to how a device feels when charging. A damaged battery can overheat and start a fire.
- Unplug devices once they are fully charged. Leaving a device plugged in can increase heat and stress on the battery.
The Parade of Lights is not only a fun and festive evening, but also an opportunity to remind residents that fire safety starts with simple steps at home,” says Chief Flynn. “This year we encourage everyone to Charge into Fire Safety by taking a few minutes to make sure they are charging devices safely.”
The parade will feature fire trucks and emergency vehicles from Lancaster and neighboring towns. Everyone is invited to line the streets, enjoy the procession and take this opportunity to speak with the families about fire prevention. Candy will be handed out by walkers along the parade route. Please help us keep children safely out of the roadway.
